We love to celebrate babies in our culture! If you’re pregnant or have ever been pregnant, you know that your baby shower is one of the most momentous occasions of your pregnancy. We spend hours perfecting our baby registry, inviting our girlfriends, and hammering out the details of this baby-centered party.
Mother blessings (also known as blessingways in the native Navajo tradition) are spiritual, mother-centric events during pregnancy that focus on pampering the mother-to-be, empowering her for her birthing journey ahead and showing support and encouragement. Rather than car seats and bottles and cute outfits for the baby, attendees bring their wisdom and experience to bless the mother.
At a mother blessing, women gather together in a circle to share stories, blessings, prayers, and encouragement for the mother-to-be. Here are some common rituals performed at mother blessings to bring love, strength, and encouragement to a pregnant woman:
- Birth necklace | Ask each attendee to bring a special bead and a blessing for the mother-to-be. Pass a string around the circle, and as each woman strings her bead on the necklace, she blesses the woman with words of encouragement for her journey ahead.
- Flower crown | Each guest brings a flower. The flowers are then woven into a flower crown for the mother to wear throughout her blessing (if you don’t know how to make a flower crown, my friend Matti of Cocomont Vintage and Camino Flower Shop makes gorgeous flower crowns!).
- Birth altars | Guests can bring something from nature – rocks, feathers, leaves, crystals, etc. – for the mother to place in a special box or birth altar to remind her of the support and well-wishes of her mother blessing guests.
- Labor candles | Candles make great giveaways for guests. When the mother goes into labor, attendees can be informed to light their candles as a reminder to pray for her endurance and strength.
